Just got out of an interview with Jay Wilson, and he surprised us with one thing. Attribute points are not player-assignable in D3. They're not in the blizzcon build, but we thought that was just to simplify things for new players at the show. Jay says no, that's how it is in the game now. His explanation was that it makes items even more important, and that it lets the designers plan a bit better (they can assume players will have at least X in each stat by a given level). You still get attributes, and they will still be required for equipment use, but they are automatically assigned each level up. Thus every Wizard will have the same base str/vit/dex/etc as every other Wizard of the same level. Same for the Barb and WD.

Sounds good to me. I never liked seeing sorcs and necros running around with as much hp as a barbarian or a paladin.

kinda agree. BUT really, what's wrong with letting the player decide they want their wizard to use heavier armor earlier instead of casting more spells?

Well I'd tend to agree to let people be original/stupid with there stats if they want. But they could work on a better system than "50 in strength and the rest in vitality"

Personally, I think this is a real, real bad move. Where's the character customization now? I liked loading up on a stat so I can use this or that item earlier. I like the attribute system and the idea of every class having the EXACT same stats is irksome. This puts even MORE importance on items (and D2 was bad enough about that before). I liked Legends idea about just making stats more interesting/dynamic so putting points in Energy etc was more viable. I know it can be lame when it's enough str for gear, rest vit. But this was their chance to fix it! Add more attributes, limit the number of points you can put into one per level (say you get 3 points per level, you can only put 1 into each stat, but instead of 4 stats have 8-9). I just think this takes away from the spirit of things and a small portion of the creativity in the game.

I hate to always be ragging on blizzards current moves... but I've done my share of praising/showing optimism their past work.

Standard stat growth on top of customization would have been a far better move. Say, every X levels or something, you're given Y points.

The very obvious and easy fix to stat massing in vitality is to make strength actually add a considerable amount of damage, dex add a considerable amount of ranged damage/AR (if they're even keeping AR...), and energy provide some sort of resistance to spells, based on level of course, as well as provide bonus damage. Then work in something other than +skill. The other thing, which I believe they've done, is make it so the game is more like Ninja Gaiden/DMC, where you just want to avoid damage, as opposed to spamming potions. That said, the damage also won't be retarded and one-shot you, thus eliminating the need for mass vit anyways.

I am torn though, because even though customization is "great," there's always going to be an optimal way to things, and that will probably be necessary for hardcore. Actually, the more ideal approach is to implement quests that allow you to reach that same level of customization, except on par with skills. Like Age of Conan's 'general' skill tree; except they would only be accessible through means other than strictly levelling up.

It provides another meta-game for the player as an added bonus.
