ME2 story pales compared to the first I believe, but ME2's combat doesn't make me want to gouge my eyes out. Practically half of ME2 was spent about the events/with chars in the first game. In both cases, the combat is just that annoying thing you have to do to progress the story. Like Fallout 3 and any other 'western rpg' really.

Idk. I liked the combat in Fallout 3, whereas ME was just blatantly trying to give me cancer. Also, ME had a horrible interface for the PC, imo (not sure about ME2).

I'll be honest, I liked ME1 combat to a degree.  Power usage was relatively intuitive, if badly designed, whereas despite imrpoving the powers in the sequal, butchered usage.  I actually enjoyed the gun upgrading system in one as opposed to two, it forced situational combat, I just wish there had been more of a weight on that as opposed to being able to plow your way through everything with brute force.  (this is more true in higher difficulties, but that puts more of a weight on hiding and occasionally popping out to take a shot, and less on tailoring your upgrades to each battle).

ME1 was REDICULOUSLY glitchy.  To this day there are conversations where I'll be talking to a wall; people get stuck in ceilings, elevators don't  work, occasionally biotics will make my arm get stuck coming out of my head, or make me fly out of the level, just a long list  of bugs a mile long, and it really detracts, but it's still one of my "best games."

ME2 basically "overfixed" all the problems.  Copy pasted levels? ok, now you don't get any extra levels.  Bad driving? now you don't get any driving.  Annoying weapon/inventory management system?  Weapon management that a 2 year old could manage that gives you no real choices.  Complex combat interface?  All powers are now tied to one cooldown to make battles annoyingly samey and slow.

It made me a very sad panda, I had hoped they would have actually fixed the problems in 1 and used the extra years gap in between to learn from their mistakes, but instead they just made a long list of new ones.  ME1 also had a better story, better atmosphere, better, well, just about everything.  The only elements I liked more about 2 were the lack of bugs (oh thank GOD.), the higher level of character development in your party members (although it seems contrived at times, and annoying when 90% of the game is getting your party, and 5% is actual storyline.  Sure it's interesting and contributes to immersion when each character has a past that you're involved in, but it's annoying when that's ALL YOU'RE DOING.)  The universe lost SO much of it's "huge and explorable" feel in the removal of the driving, explorable planets/bases, and huge weapon/upgrade trading system, and that was so much of what made 1 appealing.

It can't have 'overfixed' if it got me to play ME2 when I avoided ME1 dearly, and got you to still play ME2, despite complaints.

A million times over. At least in FFVI when they had you getting your party in world of ruin, they always (okay usually) tied it back to the overarching storyline events. Ex) Terra protecting orphans vs Cyan writing letters.

kaye: no; it really didn't.  I played me2 once.  one run through, and haven't touched it since.  ME1, I played through maybe 10 times, and bought the DLC.  I had no idea me2 would be the way it was when I preordered it, and untill you have the prescience to know a sequel will completely butcher it's predecessor before any details have been released, I'm pretty sure the rest of us don't either.
