:( AE really did have some nice new terrain (trees in bases, more variation in the tiles and a nice heightfield. There where some slight things not perfect (ramps, lost blocking opportunity on left NE shortcut).

I hope you would consider a proper version of AE in the future, but it's your choice. If you do, please consider showing/testing the map to a closed group and let them play a couple of games. Take your time. An 'open beta' is like throwing the (unpolished) pearls for the swines.

Long time listener, first time caller. Figured this would be a good place to jump in though.

I for one was looking forward to AE. A new 'freshness' was going to be added that once ironed out would have been as brilliant as the DoTA we all fiend for so much. Like others have said it is a shame that some people just dont know how to express themselves in a rational way. They are impatient and couldnt be bothered to realize that this AE wasnt completly finished. Oh well, its all of our loss. Mayhap down the line the powers that be will be able to ignore the peons and tweak their map how they really want it to be. Good luck on your future projects. I, for one, will be watching for them.

I would just like to say, I joined this place to download AE without having to do it over a b.net (because we all know how downloading fun maps in game is... <_< )
And I personally hate registering for new places every other day to gain access to a search engine so I could try and find the elusive AE download post (didn't realise it was removed)... but I did it anyway.

I want DoTA the way Eul invisioned it... AE sounded like a fantastic concept, and I was greatly looking forward to custom content. Sure it would have lagged my machine a bit, but I would lower my resolution to offset that.

I am sad that I didn't get to enjoy AE, because I had a morning class. I am also sad that Eul felt unappreciated; because, eventually all the fecal flinging, complaints, requests, "suggestions", and flame wars will get to someone. Where the creator looks at his creation and realises that it isn't worth it anymore, that it is more work and for everyone else, than fun and for yourself. It is a sad day that Eul reached that position with AE.

Aeth you were a little out of line.

I think the whole AE release got kinda messed up due to several problems.

First it was a lot of changes, and I mean a lot, and any time you change things you leave open potential problems. AE was ambititious because it was a lot of major changes so when its released I find it interesting that Eul is suprised to find a lot of small errors.

I know there was a thread for people making skins, but I think the whole skin/feedback issue would have been better addressed if we had had a current and up to date directory of what the skin changes where going to be so people could easily voice opinions before a "final version"

Any final version with as many changes as AE is practically impossible to make without creating problems, and some occured.

What Eul got in the AE feedback thread was some people posting new game errors like the creeps not attacking enemy bases, and the unbalancing effects of changing the left creep lane, etc. etc. *edit* and the rest of the posts where people debating skin changes *edit*

All the conversations on skins was the same thing you would have gotten if there had been an open discussion on what skins would be changed/added before the release.

I don't see how any of this was really unexpected and why it was reacted to so harshly.

Due to the lack of appreciation I received for my hours of work

This wasn't a lack of appreciation, this was what people recieved as a Beta AE version and did what anyone who appreciates a map and wants to help it does, they voice there opinions and make note of bugs they found. If you want appreciation look at the fact that this many people find this map interesting and intriquing enough to take the time to debate changes, create discussions, and form a strong following.

*edit* just to clarify and summarize my position, I think this was rather unfortunate incident resulting from poor communication and missperceptions on both sides. Just reminding you that everyone is human *edit*

I agree with RHIT on this one. There were a lot of changes made, so obviously he couldn't get it perfect exactly the very first time AE was released. But then when people found errors, I guess it was taken as non-appreciation. The big problem here were the people that said "hey look here's a possible skin for the Titan, it took me a few hours, I hope you use it", then he decides to not put any new skins in. Honestly, I didn't get to play AE, which is rather unfortunate. I would have liked to see all the new skins that took a lot of work to make, but I won't now.

I'm sure Eul did put tons of work into it, and I appreciate that. But to see all of it just go out the window in a few seconds is rather disappointing.

after all of this work Eul put into his map (which i think is the greatest custom map i have ever seen) its a shame to see that he is not going to have an AE after all... Well i hope he doesnt do the same to TfG

I put the AE file on my web server. In an attempt not to piss off Eul, I won't give you the link here. If you want it, you'll have to come to #dota on irc.your-irc.net.

I never even got to play AE, so I can't really comment on any of the problems. As someone that has attempted to make several maps (none of which I ever really finished), I do appreciate all the hard work that has been put into DotA. I think the main problem is that new versions have always been released without really being tested. Like others have suggested, some closed testing probably would have been a good idea. There's usually enough of us in the IRC channel to organize a few testing games.

QUOTE (Sesshoumaru @ Nov 26 2003, 05:52 PM)
AIAndy, I don't see you with a well known map =\ Many people 'do' know what making a map takes. Should people just sit quietly and suck up to Eul, even if there are things that virtually everyone dislikes, or should they voice their opinions? :P

You are missing the point of the post. I do not suggest not to voice oppinions. But they should be voiced in a constructive non offensive way. Not just "You completely screwed it". And if they do not have anything better to say than "undo", then they should rather not post at all.
And though I do not make maps, I have made AMAI. It is an AI for Warcraft that I invested large amounts of work in. And in every thread about the subject there come some people that just state things like "It sucks completely", "It is worse than the original" after having used it one time or used a much older version. So I know well how that feels. But by now I have realized that negative statements without content are posted far more often than positive ones because if they do not want a change, what should they post about.

Yeah but AIandy, theres always going to be unconstructive people, and I only saw one really unconsctructive post and that was by dg. and I haven't seem him make a useful post to date. The majority where just opinion/constructive posts.

I agree with this one.

I have been playing dota since beta2 and I haven't stopped since. I think from my over 300 games of dota so far, I've only played normal warcraft III once, and that was when my cousin came over.

I'm gonna buy TfT just for TFG and I would at least like to see how far you got in AE. So what if we can't use TS, what is that? 1/100 of the game? Put it up and I'm sure the feedback will be positive. If it isn't, ignore those idiots.

I'm sorry to hear that AE got cancelled.

If any of my 'criticism' helped stoke this fire at all, then an apology is warranted: I am sorry to all who had so much time and energy invested in it.

The AE I played was rough around the edges, but had the makings of a good final dota map.

Something that disappoints me the most about the negative response to AE is the fact that Eul really did put in a bunch of skins suggested by everybody, sort of to make it "personalized" to the people who care the most about the map (the people on this forum).

He took the time to fill out the names of the content contributors in the in-game map summary. That's very thoughtful.

Even though the map was rough around the edges, he did put a lot into it, and, though aetherine may disagree, I think a lot of what he did in AE was what he felt people in this forum wanted -- as indicated by the 16+ page skins/icon threads. That just makes it more painful when there's 5+ pages of bitching.

I'm sorry it came down to this. I think I'll just STFU for a few days, and see what happens when the dust settles :-/

Thanks for everything Eul

-oo-

@RHIT: Though there might not have been that many posts that were completely unconstructive, there were many that were mainly offensive.
I saw lots of posts in that thread where I got the impression that the poster wanted to express that Eul screwed the map and it would have been better if AE would not have been made. And I consider that very offensive if it is done after such a short time.
